New Year Resolution: Be More Confident in Myself

Boosting your confidence means improving your self-esteem, regardless of what other people think of you. Here are some tips to become more confident.

In a perfect world, everyone is full of confidence and possesses high self-esteem. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with a full bar of sense of self-worth. Sometimes it can be hard to develop confidence, either because of personal experiences or low self esteem. In this post, here are some tips from small changes to your mindset to active habits to become more confident. 

1. Avoid Negativity

This is most apt during this time, where the pandemic has kept us indoors, or at home having most of our attention fixed onto social media. It is easy to allow ourselves to be caught up in the negativity or fake highlights that are portrayed online. Unfollow negative people and their beliefs and set some realistic beliefs about yourself.

2. Make a plan 

“Fail to plan, plan to fail.” We know the saying. If you try to tackle one big goal right away (e.g. getting a workout every day at sunrise), you are more likely to feel burned out, stressed and quitting before it gets habitual. 

Make a plan with small steps to work through each task or activity. Having a structured plan to follow will keep you focused and you waste less time thinking about the next move on the spot. Aim for some small achievements that you can tick off a list to help you gain confidence in your ability to get stuff done.

3. Personal development

Try to find something that you’re really passionate about. It could be photography, design, sports, fashion or anything. When you’ve found it, be committed to giving it a chance. More often than not, when you’re passionate about a certain activity, you are more likely to be motivated to build your skills in that area and that will translate into self-confidence.

Another confidence booster is by doing regular exercise. Sometimes, self confidence issues are tied to body perception. Now, we aren’t talking about hitting the gym and getting an instant six pack (another unrealistic goal), but by having regular exercise helps build confidence by improving body image.

4. Reflect on your past wins

It’s easy to feel unconfident when you feel like you haven’t achieved anything. Look back on the things you’re proud of, your wins. Whether it’s getting that A on that paper or going outside for a walk around the neighborhood. Keep track of your wins, big or small. Whenever you feel low in confidence, pull out the list and remind yourself of the victories you have won. 

Use these achievements to make positive affirmations about what you are capable of. These affirmations can go a long way if you tend to overthink and minimise your own confidence with negative self-talk.

Wherever you are, people with confidence inspire others to be confident. Your audience, your colleagues, your bosses, your customers and your friends. Gaining the confidence of others is key in becoming more confident.
